My Favourite Things Right Now
Get a glimpse into my world - What am I reading? What am I listening to? What brings beauty into life right now?
Hey Faith Travellers,
Today is the 1st September and in my part of the world that is the first day of spring, baby! Doesn’t feel like spring when it was 4 degrees (39F) this morning. But there is the anticipation of summer around the corner. Let’s hope for no freaky weather events, shall we?
I thought I would share my favourite things right now. I love reading other people’s “favourite things” emails and I usually pick up a few good ideas or books etc from them. So here goes…
1. Anyone see the Blue Super Moon last night?
Photo: Cristeen Smith -The super blue moon, as seen from Auckland's Te Atatu, above Harbourview Beach.
There will not be another blue supermoon until 2037. Yes it doesn’t look blue but the term blue is not because of its colour but because it is the second super moon in the month of August.
Absolutely love being out in nature and have tried this winter to get out for a walk in between the rain and darkness. I would love to hear your recent adventures in nature - comment away.
2. What am I reading?
I have a varied bunch of books that I am currently reading to share with you. I tend to keep a few books on the go at the same time. Usually they are completely different from each other and I pick them up and down depending on my mood.
“A More Christlike God” by Bradley Jersak
I am reading this one slowly, a little bit here, a little bit there because it is so rich and deep. I will probably need to reread this a couple of times to help my mind to take hold of the new paradigm of a God that looks like Jesus. This book answers the question - What is God like? but the answers probably are not what you were taught in Sunday School.
“Psalms for Normal People: A Guide to the Most Relentlessly Theological Book in the Bible” by Joshua T James
I have a new Bible study I will be attending soon on the book of Psalms so I thought I would do some prereading with this awesome book brought to us by The Bible for Normal People podcast. This book is incredibly readable and insightful with a twist of humour thrown in.
“The Proof is in the Plants” by Simon Hill
Simon is an Australian nutritionist and physiotherapist and hosts the popular podcast “Plant Proof”. This book is incredibly well researched with helpful graphics that show real health is in eating a wide variety of plants daily.
“Written on the Wind” by Elizabeth Camden
Here’s my current fiction reading. This is book two in the Blackstone Legacy series. I love Elizabeth’s writing. She is a Christian author who mainly writes historical fiction. The Christianity flavour is not flaky or over the top but kept real. I love her Facebook page where she shares historic photos from her current research with background information - super interesting.
“God is Not in Control” by Jason Clark
“God Can’t” by Thomas Jay Oord
I am currently reading two books on Kindle, both on the same topic but they each come at it from different angles. I am not sure what I think yet but I am processing the topic. Both books are answering the big question of why evil and suffering exists and where God is in the middle of it all. That don’t give the common answer to suffering, that God is in control but offer another viewpoint where God’s love is centre stage.
So that is my current reading pile - what about you? please share what you are enjoying reading right now.
3. What am I listening to?
Rethinking God with Tacos Podcast
The Bible for Normal People Podcast
These two are my main regular podcasts that I listen to while walking or driving to work. I highly recommend them. They both interview prominent biblical scholars on various topics in a very understandable way. You will gain a biblical education without paying a cent or leaving your home!
4. Molly our cat
And then there is Molly our tabby cat who has a habit of sitting on my workpaper file when I am trying to work from home.
Who loves to bring in creatures, alive or dead, from the outside.
Who is super fussy and we currently have 4 or so different cat food we are trying and nothing seems to be satisfying her.
Who loves a scratch on her tummy like a dog.
Who basically is queen of our home. I say she is good for our mental health, except for the creatures, alive or dead.
So that is it from me. I would love to read of some of your favourite things that you are reading, watching, listening or thinking about. Just click the comment button below.
